Color Flow

Artists Comment:
Sometimes, when I start a painting, I have a plan. This particular painting had a plan of various size rectangles of different color. I rough out the plan with paint and continue to add paint until it starts to flow. This flowing process together with my manipulation of the board and paint often results in a beautiful display of color. After the painting dries, I critically study it to determine if it has any realistic suggestions or if the addition of additional abstract elements such as line or shapes could be added to make a "complete" picture. In this case, I chose to leave it as it was. It is a work in progress. Every day I look at it visualizing changes that I might make to it to make it better. So far, the colors are so beautiful I am careful not to add anything to take away from the picture. I added line to a similar picture, "Beyond Emulation 4" and line completely dominated the composition. If you have any suggestions let me know.

Color Flow is my technique of applying heavy coats of color and letting them flow together. This creates rivers of color that can not be duplicated using a brush. I coax the flowing paint by tipping the board, or using implements to move the paint around. When I see something of interest happening I quit. After the paint is dry, I look at it to see what else I could do to make it more harmonious. In this case, I did not do anything more.
