Artists Comment:
This painting was developed non-objectively. When I started out with this
picture, I had nothing specific in mind. I just pulled stuff from my junk
box and started pasting. Before it dried completely, I did my little dance
in which I fling and dribble paint, to create patches of color and lines
until I am exhausted. When all of this has dried, I began to study it, and
to jot-down all the images that I could see emerge. After studying the
possibilities, I selected the one that, to me, had good pictorial
dynamics and emotional appeal. I than set about selecting colors and shapes
and values to support the subject of the picture. This picture is considered
"warm" and the darkness "serious", all supportive of the subject matter.

This is a detail of the women's face in the above painting. The main creative part of this painting was in the initial paste-up and the subsequent visualization of the pictorial subject. While on the surface this picture appears calm, if you look closely at the underpainting you will see the turbulence that it went through on its way to serenity. A Taoist philosopher might say "you have to experience turbulence in order to experience the calm"
