"The Lady"

Acrylic (24 X 32)"

Artists Comment:
I read a book on Feng Shui and wondered if it could apply to painting. I used the basic principles of  Feng Shui "space clearing" in the development of this picture. Even though I am a novice, I think this painting has a beauty and serenity that many of my painting lack. The only paint applied by brush was the outline of the figure and some slight shading  in the neck area. The remainder of the painting is the raw paste-up that I use as the beginning for all my paintings.

I don't know who this lady is, but I do know she played an important part in my life.

Detail of Large Picture

This is a detail of the rear part of the hat brim. The yellow was added to emphasise the string that was arbitrarily added during the paste-up. Can you see how chaotic my painting begin?  My paintings all start out with the action painting of Abstract Expressionism and end up as figurative.  Pollock and other Abstract Expressionists started to return to the figurative late in their career. The paste-up consisted of many found objects, tissue paper, and string.  These are all held together with Elmers glue, tinted with watercolor pigments.
