Artists Comment:
This painting reflects my attempt to give more freedom to color. Usually,
color is used to define the form. In this picture, the form of
the man is rather transparent. The color overlaps the boundary lines
of the form and is united with the background. It creates a kind of airyness
to the overall picture that I like. The lines that define the man were
there. All I had to do was recognize them and apply a little paint
to make them stand out.

This is a detail of the left side of the head. Do you see the words on the cereal box that I used to prepare the painting surface? Please notice the string that defines his shoulder. It was randomly applied during the paste-up. As usual, During the paste-up, I have no idea what the painting will be about. Lots of people look at the paste-up surface before I start painting and can pick out figures. The trick is, however, picking out figures that make a total composition having meaning!
