"The American Hero"

Acrylic (32 X 24) Inches

Artists Comment:
As usual, this painting was developed non-objectively. When I started, I had nothing specific in mind. I pulled stuff from my junk box and started pasting and before it dried completely, I did my little dance in which I fling and dribble paint, to create patches of color and lines.  I do this until I am satisfied. When all of this has dried, I began to study it, and to sketch all the possibilities and images that I could see. I select the one that,to me, has good pictorial dynamics and emotional appeal. I had an art show at Quad City Arts in downtown Rock Island, Illinois. There was a homeless veteran that came everyday to look at the pictures and to help himself to the free snacks that were given out. I believe that the plight of the homeless veterans were on my mind when I did this painting. I tried to represent the weight of defending this country by the bands of flag over his back. The anger by the broken fire hydrant and of course, the cold and indifferent capital in the background.

Detail of Large Picture

This is a detail of the area just above the fire hydrant. As usual, the main creative part of this painting was in the initial paste-up and the subsequent visualization of the pictorial elements.
