Artists Comment:
Vincent VanGogh is one of my idols. I tried to us his self portraits as a guide
for this painting. I began painting thinking that his self portraits represent
his self image of himself. Most of them represent an unkempt and troubled man.
I then found a photo of him on the Internet and he was an average looking gentleman.
That required me to rework the painting to represent my view of him. This was
a very hard painting to make and I redid it many times. I really did not know
the man and I went against my normal method of letting the materials determine
the content of the picture. The picture suffers because of this. I should have
known better.

This is a detail of the upper part of the picture at Vincent's hair line. You can see the underpainting. This is exactly the same method used in the painting "Emulation One" and "Emulation Two". I would have been better off if I had stopped after the Pollock type underpainting was finished.
